This is a protest. The EU should ban large scale face recognition in public spaces. If they don't, then the door is left open to serious abuse.
Stalkers.EU is an educational project by artist and privacy designer Tijmen Schep. It reveals how easy it is to perform biometric mass surveillance; this website was built in two days.
It is inspired by the unethical practices of companies such as Clearview AI, as wel as the current debate around the new European AI Act. Many activists are fighting to ban mass biometric surveillance.
While this website is an obvious privacy disaster, it does not store any personal data. For example, the victim's photo is NOT uploaded to our server. It is processed in your browser only. Similarly, the face recognition algorithm runs completely locally, in your own browser. Also: this website does not use cookies or similar online tracking.
Pick up the phone and reach out to a EU Parliament member from your country. Let them know you are a citizen that cares about this issue.
The publicly available cameras are sourced from insecam.org. The face recognition AI is based on an open source project called FaceApi JS.
